About Me
Personal Life: Pemphero Wamwale Mphande was born on the 18 September in 1992 at Mlambe Hospital in Lunzu, Blantyre. He has two sisters and has a three years old daughter, Withu Natalia Mphande. He is not married and lives alone in Blantyre.
Education: Pemphero did his primary school at different schools ending with St Peter’s Primary school in 2005. In 2006 he joined Phwezi boys secondary school till 2009. In 2010 he joined the University of Malawi, College of Medicine till 2016 graduating with Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences on 18th January in 2017.
Work: Pemphero joined Malawi Blood Transfusion services soon after College as a temporary laboratory officer in 2016 from November to December. In February of 2017, he became the Executive Director of Forum for AIDS Counselling and Training (FACT) which he founded. He still serves as the Director of the organization to date.
Early Leadership: Pemphero started venturing into leadership while in College. He became the first elected President of College of Medicine Medical Laboratory Sciences students association in 2012. In 2013 he became the President of College of Medicine AIDS Counselling and Training Society till 2016.
Politics and Activism: In 2016, he founded Viva La Revolution Malawienne together with Dr Joram Nyirongo, a social policitical movement calling for the ousting of President Peter Mutharika. In 2017 he joined mainstream politics as the public relations officer of Umodzi Party and Prof John Chisi, the party’s President. In 2018, he was elected National Youth Director a role from which he resigned in 2019.
Under the theme “Nthawi Yakwana Timudzutse Malawi Limodzi” Pemphero launched his bid for MP in the 2019 tripartite elections. He run a campaign that was hailed as issue based with his economic empowerment agenda. He lost to Noel Lipipa of DPP.
In 2018, Pemphero also started his career as an activist for different social causes. He came to prominence with anti-Gandhi statue campaigns for which he took an injunction.
In 2019, he became the Chief Operations strategist of Citizens for Progressive Action. In 2020, he was appointed Board Chairperson of Youth for Change.
Beliefs: Pemphero is pro-choice when it comes to abortion and in his bid for MP in 2019, he was the only candidate in support of the termination of pregnancy bill. He was also the only one openly in support of LBGTQ+ rights.
Politicially, he considers himself a liberal and left leaning while sometimes he has been seen to support certain far right leaders and populist leaders such as Donald Trump. He advocates for economic policies that target tax cuts for corporate institutions as an incentive to attract more foreign investors and create jobs. He also advocates for industrialization where local raw materials are processed into exportable goods.
